About concrete retaining walls
Poured concrete walls are formed on site and reinforced with steel rebar over a concrete footing. They take up less room than block or boulder walls, which makes them a good choice where space is tight.
Concrete is often used for taller structural walls, walls along driveways and basements, and walls that hold up a building or parking area. The face can be left smooth, stamped, or covered with stone veneer.

What the work usually includes
Engineering and permit
Taller structural walls usually need stamped drawings and a permit. Your contractor will check what applies.
Footing and rebar
A reinforced footing is poured and steel is tied in to match the design.
Forming and pouring
Forms are set, the wall is poured and cured, then the forms come off.
Waterproofing and drainage
The back of the wall is sealed, and drain pipe, gravel and weep holes relieve water pressure.
Does a concrete wall crack?
Small shrinkage cracks are normal. Control joints, proper reinforcement and drainage keep cracks from becoming structural problems.
Can a concrete wall look like stone?
Yes. Stamped form liners or a natural or manufactured stone veneer can give a concrete wall a stone look.
