About block retaining walls

Segmental block walls are built from interlocking concrete units that stack without mortar. Each course sets back slightly into the hill, and the blocks lock together with lips or pins, so the wall can flex a little without cracking.

Block comes in many colors and textures, from smooth modern faces to split-face blocks that look like cut stone. For taller walls, layers of geogrid run back into the soil to anchor the wall to the hillside.

Why homeowners choose block

  • Strong enough for most residential walls, including taller engineered walls
  • Lower cost per square foot than natural stone or poured concrete
  • Consistent, tidy look that fits most homes
  • Can be built in curves, steps and terraces
  • Matching caps, columns and stair units are available

The process

What the work usually includes

Excavation and gravel base

A trench is dug below grade and filled with compacted crushed stone so the first course sits perfectly level.

Buried first course

The bottom row is partly buried for stability and leveled block by block.

Courses and geogrid

Blocks are stacked with the proper setback. Taller walls get geogrid layers rolled back into the compacted backfill.

Drain pipe and drainage stone

Perforated pipe and clean gravel behind the wall carry water out so it does not build pressure.

Caps and finish grading

Cap units are glued on top and the soil above and below the wall is graded to steer water away.

Questions

Block Retaining Walls FAQ

Still have a question? Call (423) 395-1848.

How long does a block retaining wall last?

A properly built block wall with a good base and drainage can last 50 years or more. Poor drainage is the most common reason block walls lean or bulge early.

Do block walls need mortar?

No. Segmental blocks are dry-stacked and held by their own weight, the interlock and, on taller walls, geogrid. Only the caps are glued down.

Can a block wall be curved?

Yes. Most block systems can be built in gentle or tight curves, with steps and corners.
